Conceptualizing Your Business
Written by Sarah Mae Sabado

As a budding entrepreneur, one of the most important tasks you’ll have to deal with is the conceptualization of your business. What are the products or services you will offer? How do you define a “good” internet business?

To start internet business for the first time may seem a huge burden especially since you have no idea where to start. Should you make a website first? Should you prepare your content? Most expert internet entrepreneurs start with a good concept for a business and they create a website where they can place anything they want to advertise.

These are the sites known as “brochure sites” because these look like replicas of print advertisements and brochures. They contain basic information about the site. Although brochure sites are not totally worthless, they fail to take advantage of the opportunities open for them.

With the internet becoming even more advanced, the ability to make money online has become so much easier. Now you can create online shops and have people shop items from the comfort of their homes. You can also offer your skills and knowledge to more people without you leaving for the office. Your website is a great way for you to communicate with your clients, and for people to get comprehensive information about you and your company.

Before you start internet business, have a self check and think of the things that you can offer. What are your areas of expertise? Do you have an “offline” business? What opportunities can you offer through the internet? Spend some time on learning how the internet works and what online businesses need in order to survive. Look for a market niche which hasn’t been serviced well. Keep in mind that there’s always room for improvement. Even if one product or service may already sound excellent, you can always improve on their offerings.

If you are going to sell products online, then you ought to learn the difference between retailing and drop shipping. Newbie entrepreneurs prefer wholesale and drop shipping since it involves lesser risk, but of course, it also has lesser profit. Also, make sure you understand the risk-return trade off in business. Keep in mind: the bigger the profits, the higher the risk, so weigh your decisions well.
